Detoxing made simple.

The mince pies are out of reach for another 11 months, the Christmas tree has gone and maybe your clothes don't feel quite as comfortable as they did back in November.

January is a time for resolutions and of course the most common one is to get in shape and start eating healthily, so it's no wonder that detox is the word de jour .

Why detox?

The body is constantly bombarded with toxins from foods, drinks, skincare products, environmental pollution (including cigarettes), and everyday household products.

These toxins are stored in body cells and can eventually lead to ill health or generally feeling under par. If we are ingesting and inhaling more toxins than the body can cope with, our liver, kidneys and immune system become less efficient and some of the symptoms may include:

  • Frequent colds and infections
  • Stomach upsets; constipation, bloating and cramping
  • Bad breath, body odour
  • Excess weight and cravings
  • Headaches, poor memory and concentration
  • Joint aches and pains
  • Skin eruptions
  • Depression and mood swings

.and the list goes on

Here are 10 tips to get you back on track

1. Sleep: aim for 8 hours a night. Get in the routine of going to bed at the same time each night and remember to start winding down an hour before, so not working late and going straight to bed with your mind racing. Aim to have your last meal at least 2 hours before.

2. Water: ensure you are having at least 1.5 litres of plain water per day, aim to have at least half of this before lunch, and keep it at room temperature.

3. Fresh fruit and veg: vital for vitamins and minerals to revitalise the body, but also to provide fibre that binds to toxins and helps carry them out of the body.

4. Steam / Sauna: sweating is a great way to get toxins out of the body. Aim for 2 sessions a week followed by a cool (gradually getting colder) shower.

5. Epsom or Dead Sea salt baths: have the water as warm as possible to open the pores and the addition of salts helps to draw toxins from the body. This is best done last thing at night before going to bed.

6. Move: get active, this doesn't have to be a session at the gym, a brisk walk, swim or bike ride all count. Start ignoring some of those labour-saving devices. Moving the body stimulates the lymphatic system to draw out toxins.

Avoid.

7. Alcohol: a toxin that interferes with nutrient absorption, can lead to weight gain, lethargy and hormonal imbalances.

8. Caffeine: found in tea, coffee, chocolate, cola and some medication. It can interfere with energy production, sleep, lead to mood swings and irritability and inhibit the absorption of nutrients.

9. Processed / packaged foods: often high in sugar, salt and hydrogenated fats. Make a resolution to be more organised with shopping and meal times, it only takes a few minutes to grill, bake or steam some fish and vegetables.

10. Sugar: it can disrupt the way the body processes nutrients including essential fats. Sugar also has a negative effect on the immune system, so beware all those hidden sugars in drinks, cereals and so-called 'healthy' and 'natural' foods.
