What can you do?

  1. Conquer your sweet tooth Sugar is addictive and can set up a cycle so that you have constant sugar cravings. Replace cakes, biscuits and pastries with fresh fruits. These are naturally high in fibre and will also help you feel fuller for longer. The less sugar you eat the less bloated you will feel and your cravings will be reduced. You will also notice that by eliminating sugar you will feel less bloated, have more energy and may even lose weight.

  2. Stay hydrated Try and drink 1.5 litres of water every day – (this is 8 mugs or glasses). If you drink a lot of caffeine, it's probably best to cut down rather than cut it out. Sudden withdrawal can leave you headachy and irritable.
Try and avoid alcohol – part from being harmful for your liver, it can also promote free radical formation and cause the kidneys to excrete more fluid and minerals such as zinc, magnesium and potassium.

  1. Eat more fruits and vegetables Fruits and vegetables are a great source of antioxidants and will help combat free radical damage caused by excess alcohol. Antioxidants will also help strengthen your immune system, and stimulate the liver's detoxification enzymes.  An easy way to get your optimal mix of fruit and vegetables each day is to include different colours for a broad range of body-protecting antioxidants.

  2. Eat garlic, onions, broccoli, sprouts, cabbage, watercress These vegetables will help your liver’s detoxification enzymes and will help speed up detoxification of alcohol, sugar and refined foods.

  3. Drink Green Tea Instead of drinking coffee, try green tea. Recent research indicates that the catechins in green tea help stabilize blood sugar and so may help with weight loss

  4. Eat nuts and seeds Nuts and seeds provide protein, healthy unsaturated oils, magnesium, most B vitamins, potassium and antioxidants, vitamin E and selenium.

  5. Eat live yoghurt live yoghurt containing lactobacillus and bifidobacteria for protein, calcium, B vitamins, zinc and to promote the growth of healthy bowel bacteria.
